Native Son Jeff Daniels’ Musical Tour Coming To Ann Arbor

In case you still haven’t heard, Jeff Daniels is a prolific music talent as well. And in case you’ve never heard his music, you’ll get the chance Nov 25 when Southeast Michigan’s native son brings his show to the Michigan Theatre in Ann Arbor.

In addition to roles like Will McAvoy in the HBO series The Newsroom or his many roles in movies such as The Martian and The Five People You Meet In Heaven, Daniel’s squeezes in songwriting and performing. He’s written over 400 songs and performed 300 gigs all over the United States in the past 12 years.

His passion for songwriting and music has always been there behind the scenes. On his website, he tells us,

“In 1976, I bought a Guild D-40 from Herb David’s Guitar Studio in Ann Arbor, Michigan, threw it in the back of my old Buick, and moved to New York City. That guitar led me to a creative outlet, became a solace, my church, a road into the artist I didn’t know existed.”

Although he could fill larger venues, Daniel’s likes to give his performances a strong sense of intimacy. He intentionally chooses modest venues. If there is none available, he will turn a larger venue into a smaller one like reducing Kalamazoo’s 1,500-seat State Theater into a 300-seater.

There are breaks in the music where he chats unscripted with the audience about whatever is on his mind or their mind. Daniel’s aim is to present a strong sense of community and family during the evening. This is easily accomplished when he performs with his son Ben’s band.

It’s an acoustic act with Daniel’s and friends playing a variety of blues artists such as Keb Mo and Taj Mahal in addition to his own works.

“So with that, welcome to the musical side of myself. Through this little portal into the digital universe and with a singular focus on the songs that continue to pour out of my pores, take my hand as I valiantly meander my way towards something yet to be defined and, more than likely, never will be. Life’s more fun that way, don’t ya think?” – Jeff Daniels
