Mill Creek Science Career Exploration Night Gallery

Mill Creek Middle School  hosted their first Science Career Exploration Night in March!

Students and their families met with local chemists, doctors, engineers, nurses, physical therapists, psychologists and scientists.

The students participated in exciting, hands-on experiments and demonstrations:

  • a 3D printer
  • a drone
  • a LEGO Mindstorms robot
  • an echocardiography machine
  • prosthetics
  • automotive paint and coatings testing…and more.

The students also made slime, and made glue from milk. They saw crystallization happen and also observed Tollen’s Test (Silver Mirror) and the Oscillating Clock. There were also psychology experiments, a trivia contest, and prizes.

Many studies have underscored the importance of hands-on activities to engage young learners. Students who physically experience scientific concepts understand them more deeply and score better on science tests, according to an April 2015 study by the University of Chicago’s Department of Psychology/Human Performance Lab. Brain scans showed that students who took a hands-on approach to learning had activation in sensory and motor-related parts of the brain when they later thought about concepts related to the science activities they’d participated in.

Thanks to the scientists from the following companies who volunteered their time and talent: Cayman Chemical Company, University of Michigan, Toyota, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Eastern Michigan University, MC3 Cardiovascular, and the Society of Women Engineers at the University of Michigan. Thanks to the staff, students and families who attended.

Editor’s note: Special thanks are also due to parent Jill Boydston and teacher Todd Fry for putting this event together and thanks to Jill for the photos!
