Holiday Events and a Live Reindeer at Dexter District Library

December brings an enjoyable variety of holiday themed events for teens, tweens and kids of all ages to the Dexter District Library. Everyone is invited to attend these free programs.

On Tuesday, December 5, the First Tuesday Lego Club meets in the afternoon from 4:00 to 5:00 pm. Kids in grade K through 8 are invited to spend an afternoon making their own Lego creations while visiting with old friends and making new ones. Legos and Lego instruction books are provided by the Library.

Holiday Cards and Crafts comes to the Library on Saturday, December 9 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. Kids, tweens and teens are invited to join us for an hour of crafting as we make an assortment of cards and small gifts for family and friends. Samples and patterns will be available for various skill levels or create your own designs. Festive music and snacks will be provided. Registration is not required.

Get up close and personal with a live reindeer outside the Library on Saturday, December 16 from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. On the lower level, we’ll have a variety of holiday crafts for kids of all ages. Registration is not required, everyone is welcome.

On Friday, December 21, children ages six and under, along with their caregiver, can stop by at 11:00 am for our Drop-In Holiday Story Time and Craft. Join us for 30 minutes of stories and music celebrating winter and the holidays. Refreshments and a simple craft will be provided following story time and registration is not required.

Our Teen Holiday Party on Friday, December 22 will be held from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. Teens in grades six through twelve are invited to eat, craft and be merry. We’ll have lots of food, DIY crafts, a fun gift exchange and chances to win a prize. Call 734-426-4477 today to register.

The Library will be closed on Sunday, December 24 and Monday, December 25 for the Christmas holiday. We will also be closed on Sunday, December 31 and Monday, January 1 for the New Year holiday.

On Thursday, December 28 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm, join us for “Makerspace”, a drop-in program for children in grades K through 8. Several creativity stations will be set up for kids to enjoy using a variety of building products such as Lincoln Logs, Legos, Construx, Hexabits and more. Work alone or as a team. Registration is not required.

Registration for Winter Story Times begins Thursday, December 28. Winter Story Times for toddlers and preschoolers will start on Monday, January 15 and run until Thursday, March 8. Registration is required and parents or caregivers of children may register in person at the Library or by calling 734-426-4477. Space is limited so registration will be on a first come first served basis.

Children 18 months to 3 years of age may sign up for one Toddler Story Time. Toddler Story Times are held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10:30 am. Children under 18 months may attend, however books and activities are geared for toddlers. Children 3 to 5 years of age may sign up for one Preschool Story Time. Preschool Story Times are held on Mondays or Tuesdays at 11:30 am. Combined Toddler/Preschool Story Times will be offered on Wednesdays at 11:30 am. Drop-In Story Times for all ages will be offered on Thursdays at 10:30 am in the lower level meeting room from January 18 to March 8. Infants are welcome at story times with their siblings. Parents or caregivers are required to attend. Each session lasts approximately 30 minutes.

Winter Story Times for children include picture, pop-up and interactive books, flannel-board stories, songs, puppets, finger plays, crafts and other activities that encourage a love of reading to your child.

The month ends with a Happy Noon Year Party for all ages. Everyone is invited to stop by the Library on Friday, December 29 from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm for a variety of games and winter crafts while enjoying some snacks and music. At 11:50 am, we will pass out party hats and noisemakers, countdown to noon (with Olaf, our special snowman guest) and celebrate Happy Noon Year. This is a great way for little ones to enjoy the thrill of New Year’s Eve without staying awake until midnight. Registration is not required.
