Holiday Hustle Supports Karen’s Trail And Other Charities

You can get a head start on burning off those holiday calories this Saturday, Dec. 9, at Dexter’s annual Holiday Hustle run/walk.

Since its inception almost ten years ago, the popular event has grown into an event more like a winter carnival than a mere 5K run. Music, costumed participants, vendors and charitable giving combine for a bright, festive community excitement energizing the last couple weeks before Christmas. You don’t even have to participate to enjoy the event – just soak up the vibe.

The Holiday Hustle is a family affair. Children and adults alike can take a 1 mile stroll/trot around the decorated neighborhoods of Dexter in the fresh December air. More serious runners, or not, can then participate in the 5K. Either way, the whole event is designed to spike the holiday spirit.

This year The Holiday Hustle has partnered with Karen’s Trail. Karen’s Trail honors the life and legacy of Karen McKeachie – world class triathlete, athletic pioneer, community leader, and a force of nature to all  who knew her. Karen’s Trail celebrates what Karen loved most by expanding recreational opportunities for everyone in the region.

Along with other charities, a portion of the proceeds honors Karen by going towards the construction of the 70 mile Border-to-Border trail system within the next five years. This will be a paved, non-motorized trail that follows the Huron River all the way from its entry into Washtenaw County just south of Pinckney until its exit into Wayne County near Belleville.

The Karen’s Trail project is also enthusiastically supported by the Huron Waterloo Pathways Initiative, and the Friends of the Border to Border Trail.

Participants are also encouraged to bring along canned non-perishable food items to donate to Faith In Action who helps people in need in the Dexter-Chelsea area. For each item donated, runners will receive a ticket for the door prize drawings.

Custom beanies are provided to all entrants and custom gingerbread man medals to all 5K finishers. Festive medals go to all 1 Mile finishers. And new for 2017, optional shirt are available for purchase at the time of registration.

The 1 Mile run/walk begins at 4 PM and the 5K at 4:30 PM in Monument Park in downtown Dexter. It’s a popular event so arrive in plenty of time to find parking, get your packet and tickets.
