Hockey: Dreads fall in overtime in pre-regional game

The Dexter boys’ hockey team did a good job containing Pinckney’s Connor Smith for most of the game but when the leading goal-scorer in the state switched gears late in the game, the Dreadnaughts couldn’t keep up.

Smith scored two late goals in regulation and then netted the game-winner in a heartbreaking 4-3 overtime loss in a pre-regional game on Monday at the Chelsea Arctic Coliseum.

The loss ended Dexter’s season at 7-16-1.

“It was a very exciting game and a fun one to watch for the fans,” said Dexter coach Donnie Busdeker. “Unfortunately, we came out on the short end. We played very well for most of the game. Smith is big and fast and we limited him for most of the game but he showed why he’s the leading goal scorer in the state.”

Smith game into the game with 56 goals and scored all four for the Pirates.

Dexter took a 2-1 lead after the first period. Brandon Wright scored a power-play goal with assists from Cam Milne and Dylan Fox. Milne scored with assists from Wright and Eric Bristow for Dexter’s second goal.

Kyle Burke’s third-period goal made it 3-1 in the third period. Garrett Eggleston and Kyle Murphy earned the assists.
