For the third year in the last four, Dexter Rugby Football Club will host the eastern high-school rugby playoffs for the Michigan Youth Rugby Association.   This year the playoff format is different from previous seasons: in the regional round teams will only play a quarter-final, with winners from each side of the state advancing to a Final Four at West Ottawa High School’s rugby stadium in Holland, Mi., next weekend.

Division II winners, and local rivals of the Dexter Devils, Brighton High School, play the Devils’ other neighbors, Washtenaw RFC, of Ann Arbor, at 12.30 pm, while the Devils, winners of Division I East again, play Dearborn at 3.30 for a place in the Final Four.  Entrance is free and large crowds are expected.

The Devils, playing this year in collaboration with Genesee County Elite RFC, have had another fine season, and last weekend were the top Michigan team at the very demanding Midwest Boys High-school Championship in Elkhart, Indiana, but head coaches Paul Burke, Doug Karaska, and Dustin Steedman (GCERFC) will know that the Dearborn Silverbacks always provide tough opposition, with big, effective forwards and a lot of determination.  The distraction of Saturday’s Dexter High School Prom is another concern – will the Devils be able to concentrate on the matter in hand, or, even worse, will some players be unable to play because of Prom commitments?  Starting at 3.30 pm on Saturday, those questions will be answered.   The Devils’ Twitter feed will provide score updates for those unable to attend, but the Devils hope to enjoy significant home support at DHS.
