Girls Lacrosse: Lady Dreadnaughts win two in a row

After a modest two-game losing streak, the Dexter girls’ lacrosse team has bounced back with a pair of solid victories. On Tuesday, the Dreadnaughts knocked off an improved Ann Arbor Huron club 17-7.

This game went far better for the Dreads than the week before against Huron.

“We possessed the ball beautifully and had lots of feeding and great shooting,” said Dexter Coach Taylor Haverty. “We still missed some shots, but were able to rebound really well and finish the possessions with goals. Our ground ball control was much better, and we were much more competitive than the previous match up. Draw control was better too, we seemed to come out with the ball more often than not.”

Haverty said the difference maker between this game and the previous game against the River Rats was “heart.”

“We showed up with energy and ready to play,” she said.

The following players led the Dexter stat sheet:
Carlie Pastorino, Senior, 2 goals, 2 assists
Kathleen Niedermeier Senior, 4 goals, 2 assists
Marin Waddington, Junior, 3 goals, 1 assist
Skylar Waddington, Junior, 5 goals, 1 assist
Gabi Waddington, Junior, 1 goal, 1 assist
Emily Stegmuller, Senior, 1 goal
Sierra Holmes, Sophomore, 1 goal
Bruna Meister, Sophomore, 4 saves

On April 28, the Dreads toppled host Tecumseh 18-7.

Haverty called it a great team win.

“Not much else to say,” she said. “We had lots of assists, which is what we want to see. Good ball movement, good transitions and rides, and good defense. We really played well in all facets of the game.”

Leaders in this game included:
Alisha Birchmeier, Junior, 2 goals, 2 assists
Carlie Pastorino, Senior, 2 goals
Kathleen Niedermeier, Senior, 1 goal, 2 assists
Marin Waddington, Junior, 4 goals, 2 assists

Emily Stegmuller, Senior, 1 goal
Darby Baird, Senior, 1 goal

Emily Stegmuller, Senior, 1 goal, 1 assist
Darby Baird, Senior, 1 goal
Bruna Meister, Sophomore, 3 saves

On April 21, Dexter lost to Dewitt 17-7.

“This was an all-around rough game for Dexter,” Haverty said. “It was our first away game and we didn’t show up mentally prepared. It was a physical game and while I thought they fought pretty tough, they couldn’t seem to win face offs or ground balls consistently enough.”

Team leaders included:
Alicia Birchmeier, Junior, 1 assist
Marin Waddington, Junior, 2 goals
Skylar Waddington, Junior, 4 goals
Gabi Waddington, Junior, 1 goal
Bruna Meister, Sophomore, 11 saves
