The Dexter girls’ basketball team has responded the way great teams do after losing – by winning. But the Dreads have taken it a step or three further by winning three straight in blowout wins over league opponents.
After opening the season with a loss to Ohio powerhouse Toledo Catholic Central, Dexter knocked off Lincoln (61-16), Tecumseh (54-20) and Ypsilanti (47-27).
The Dreadnaughts have had great support from the Dexter 7th and 8th grade teams. The younger girls recently shared in a few of the wins with the varsity team, making signs and posing for team photos after cheering them on to wins.
Many of the eighth grade girls currently play on a travel team called the Southeastern Swarm, coached by Dan Schlaff, whose daughter Cayla plays on the varsity team. And many of the current seniors on the Dexter varsity team also played for the Swarm from fifth to eighth grade.
In fact, the varsity girls won a D2 AAU state championship in those gold Swarm jerseys when they were in sixth grade.
You can catch the varsity girls in action over the holidays. The Dreads play Dec. 27-28 at the Northville Holiday Tournament at Northville High School. Dexter opens up that Sunday against Warren Cousino, a highly ranked Class A team in the state.
