The Dexter girls’ basketball team heads into the final week of the regular season with rival Chelsea on Friday in a rematch of an earlier lopsided Dexter win. The Dreads extended their winning streak to 18 games on Friday night with a win over Ypsilanti and remain on course for a showdown with Ann Arbor Huron in Districts.
Friday’s win over Ypsilanti wasn’t the Dreadnaughts’ best game of the season but playing a quality opponent should only help prepare for the River Rats. Dexter led 7-2 in the first quarter and 17-10 at halftime. Dexter led by only three (29-26) after three quarters but limited their hosts to just two points in the final quarter to lock down a 37-28 win.
Cayla Schlaff led Dexter with nine points, Taylor Olson scored eight and Shelbea James had seven points and four rebounds. Hannah Wing had six points and four rebounds. Amanda Fileccia led the team with five rebounds.
Ypsilanti tried to slow down the pace of the game, often holding the ball for 30 to 40 seconds before starting to run the offense.
Ypsilanti had loud crowd in the stands as they celebrated Senior Night.
It was a good tune-up for the Dreads heading into Friday’s showdown at Chelsea and then Districts.
Dexter’s win and Chelsea’s loss on Friday locked up the SEC White Division title for the Dreadnaughts.
The Dreads have five players with more than 100 points, led by Olson with 213. Anna Love has 157 points, James has 130 points, Schlaff has 123 and Wing has 104.
