The Encore Musical Theatre Company’s production of ‘9-to-5’ kicked off this past weekend and has garnered some very positive reaction from the theater press in Michigan.
EncoreMichigan.com had some telling experiences to share, such as the fact that “laughter in the audience on opening night sometimes overpowered the continuing dialogue from the stage and there was shushing from people trying to hear every word.”
That’s a good problem to have, unless you’re a reviewer. EncoreMichigan reviewer Kym Reinstadler uses words like “rousing” and “powerful,” while wishing that the Encore’s stage was more spacious to let the production’s musical performances spread their wings more fully.
She also described one of the actors as “side-splittingly funny.”
The Ann Arbor District Library’s Pulp – Arts Around Ann Arbor took a little more nuanced of a trot through the particulars of Encore’s iteration of this Dolly Parton creation, even getting a little political at times in Ann Arbor’s fashion.
Like Reinstadler, Pulp’s Hugh Gallagher sang the praises of this singin’ show, referring to it as a “a diverting and sometimes hilarious romp” that is relatable to contemporary audiences who may not have been around for the 1970s hit film, both of which “resonates and plays to the fantasies of office workers everywhere.”
