Excellence 4 Dexter Students (E4DS) completed its first fundraising campaign drive this summer to raise money for the creation of enrichment coordinator positions at several DCS buildings.
Retired DCS teacher Peter will be performing this function for Wylie students, while teaching retiree Cheryl Wells is performing this role for Creekside students.
District officials plan to create such a position at Mill Creek Middle School in the future, based on projected future funding levels of E4DS donation levels.
E4DS President Jennifer Kangas presented to check to DCS Board of Education President Michael Wendorf and Superintendent Chris Timmis Monday evening, during which she thanked the various private and business donors who supported the creation of the two enrichment coordinators so far.
The ultimate goal is to fund the creation of six enrichment coordinators throughout the district, one for each building in the district. Each coordinator’s mission is to “provide enrichment and personalized learning opportunities for students.”
The total fundraising goal to support this entire initiative is $400,000. Ultimately Kangas and the other E4DS fundraisers are looking to garner $115 per student from families
The Dexter High School coordinator would be focused on creating learning opportunities for high school students outside of the walls of the building housing their classroom, in the form of internships and other career opportunities at local businesses, universities, and community organizations.
E4DS sprang forth from the social media scene into being a community organization supporting education through grassroots fundraising from private citizens and local businesses in 2015.
The initial goal was to raise $300 per Dexter student and although the overall fundraising goal and project scope has changed over time, the group’s ultimate goal is to enhance per pupil funding for all Dexter students in order to better the educational experience of all Dexter students.
