The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office is looking into a number of “suspicious” approaches to women this week. Several Dexter area women have complained about a man who approached them at the Meijer Shopping Center at 5645 Jackson Road.
Three incidents are being investigated as of Wednesday morning, two of which were in Scio Township on the afternoon of Monday, May 9, according to a press release issued this morning by the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office.
At approximately noon a man followed a woman to the customer service desk of the store. He is described by sheriff’s deputies as a black male in his late 20’s to early 30’s. The man reportedly got “extremely” close and complimented the woman on her appearance and “physical features.”
A man matching that same description was seen sitting outside in a white 2000 Toyota Camry at approximately 2:30 p.m. He tried coaxing another woman towards his vehicle. The woman didn’t take the bait and instead walked into the store while ignoring the man’s attempts at contact. The sheriff believes that it was the same man in both incidents.
“As of now, there have been no crimes committed,” Sheriff Director of Communications Derrick Jackson wrote. “However the investigation is ongoing to determine if there is a motive in either contact.”
Attempts to reach Meijer’s corporate media division were not responded to as of press time, and attempts to contact store managers for comment were declined.
Deputies are investigating a number of other incidents that they believe are related to the incidents in Scio Township.
At approximately 1 a.m. on the same day, a Dexter area woman parked her car downtown and went for a late night jog. She was mid-run when she realized that a black, half-ton pickup truck with tinted windows was following her, according to the same press release.
She diverted her jogging route to a gas station on Baker Road and informed the clerk of the situation. Upon leaving again “one of the people at the gas station observed the truck parked across the street,” the clerk recounted to deputies.
The suspicious truck began following her again and the witness at the gas station got into his vehicle and pursued the truck and it’s operator, who left the area via Mast Road when they realized that a third party was intervening in the situation.
No license plate was picked up in either incident.
