More than 170 new faces registered to join the Dexter Community Schools classes of 2028 and 2029 last week during Kindergarten and Young Fives registration.
Although in-person registration isn’t required, Bates Elementary School Principal Tim Authier said the face-to-face interaction gives teachers, students and parents a chance to acquainted.
“We get to know the kids a lot better so that when we’re building class lists and placing kids in buildings and stuff we’re doing so with more knowledge and insight about the kids so that kids can have a great start to the school year,” he said.
Cornerstone Elementary Principal Craig McCalla said this year’s Kindergarten registration numbers are on par with years past, but Young Fives is growing.
“More Young Fives,” he said. “Kindergarten numbers are pretty much right in line with the last few years. We’re pretty happy.”
While Kindergarten is mandatory in the state of Michigan, Young Fives is not. Authier describes Dexter’s Young Fives program below:
Parents who still wish to register their children can do so by visiting either the Bates or Cornerstone school offices.
