On Monday evening, the 23rd of October, the Rotary Club of Dexter teamed up with the Dexter High School (DHS) Alternative Education (Alt Ed) program to host a financial aid workshop for both the Rotary STRIVE (Students Taking Renewed Interest in the Value of Education) students, who attend Washtenaw Community College (WCC), as well as the DHS Alt Ed students. The Rotary Club provided a pasta dinner for the students, and the DHS Alt Ed provided the facilities. It was the first workshop of its nature for either program, and it proved to be a resounding success.
The DHS Alt Ed program, under the attentive direction of Dr. Julie Snider, is only in its second year of operation and is designed to provide selected high school students, who would not otherwise be on track to graduate, with a personalized curriculum employing innovative teaching techniques. The Dexter Rotary STRIVE project is also, coincidentally, in its second year and was built to work hand-in-glove with the Alt Ed program through a combination of mentorship, sponsorship and community service activities while also providing a continuum of support that follows students through high school and into either a vocational school or local community college.
Ms. Carrie McClure, the Assistant Director of Financial Aid at WCC, was the guest presenter and led the workshop at the DHS Copeland building. Ms. McClure explained to the students that although the application for federal student aid, commonly called the FAFSA or Free Application for Student Aid, can seem daunting, it’s altogether achievable with the line-by-line help available through the WCC Financial Aid office.
Completion of the FAFSA is not only necessary to be eligible for federal aid but also to qualify for many other aid programs. After her presentation, Ms. McClure helped individual students work through portions of their financial aid applications and then encouraged them to drop by the WCC Financial Aid office anytime if they needed further assistance.
