This is a busy time of year for hiring teachers and the Dexter Board of Education approved several at its August 17 meeting.
“Among the variables this time of year are how many student are enrolling and where that will be,” said Board President Michael Wendorf.
“We had to add a third-grade section and are still looking to fill a few positions at Wylie,” said Chris Timmis, Superintendent of the Dexter school district.
The board approved 4-0 (Schumaker, Darr, and Kipke were absent) hiring Allie Browe for an English Language Arts and Social Studies position at Mill Creek Middle School, as well as hiring Amara Karapas as an Art teacher at Mill Creek. The board also approved hiring Kimberly Mendez for a Spanish teaching position to be split between Dexter High School and Mill Creek.
The board approved a leave of absence request from Mill Creek teacher Amy Vimwala as well as the resignations of Mill Creek teachers Ethan Konett and Natalie Russell.
Timmis said there were interviews taking place on August 18 for a high school science teaching position.
“We are also in need of a lot of parapros and bus drivers too,” he said.
Timmis said that the district still needs three more host families for exchange students. Both he and board trustee Barbara Read are hosting exchange students. This year there will be 31 exchange students in the district as compared to 30 last year.
