Dexter Community Orchestra Chooses Youth Artist Competition Winner Bum Namkoong

Bum Namkoong started his music career with piano at the age of 9. He then began playing the violin in elementary school, and finally the Bb clarinet in middle school.

As a clarinetist, he has been involved in great musical programs in Michigan, such as Michigan Youth Ensemble and Michigan Honors Band, where he played under influential conductors.

Bum has also had six different private teachers, and now he works with Daniel Gilbert at University of Michigan, who inspired him to major in music. Next year, he will attend University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance to strive for a BM degree in clarinet and continue his studies with Professor Gilbert.

Besides playing clarinet, Bum also enjoys playing soccer with his friends and watching Netflix on his sofa. He is also the self-proclaimed “the best online FIFA player” in Ann Arbor.

Lastly, Bum would like to thank his wonderful clarinet teacher, Daniel Gilbert, for teaching him many great things about clarinet and for taking care of him all the time. Bum also thanks his last clarinet teacher, Cecilia Kang, for motivating him to practice clarinet.

He would also like to say a HUGE thank you to his friends and family, especially his parents, for supporting him for all of the decisions he has made. Thank you.
