Dexter boys’ basketball: Cain takes over Dreadnaughts

Tim Cain let the Belleville coaching staff know he wasn’t going anywhere unless the right coaching job became available. And Dexter wasn’t just right, it was almost perfect.

“Yeah, as soon as I heard it was available I jumped at it,” said Cain, who will replace Tim Fortescue who resigned because of a change in his full-time job schedule. “I got to know Tim a little bit and he did a great job in the two years. They had a pretty successful run under him and a very senior dominated team last year.”

Cain, 41, coached the Dexter JV team for three years when Randy Swoverland coached the varsity program. His coaching resume includes a year as the JV coach at Skyline, a varsity assistant at Saline, the varsity coach at Willow Run and the last two seasons on the bench with the Belleville varsity.

Cain played basketball and graduated from Saline HS before attending the University of Kentucky. He teaches physical education and health at Detroit Edison Public School Academy.

“I know the community and got along great with the parents when I was here,” he said. “I also live on the west side of Ann Arbor so Dexter is close to where I live. It’s a great fit in a lot of ways.”

He says his coaching philosophy is a mixture of what he’s learned over the years working with “some excellent coaches.”

“I’ve been able to steal a lot,” he said. “But I take a page from Tom Izzo. I believe it all starts with defense and rebounding. I like to push the ball and have good flow but that starts on playing defense and rebounding the basketball.”

He is taking over a team that went 17-5 last year.
“They had a lot of seniors on that team so we are starting over,” he said.

Dexter starts over with a new coach and new roster Dec. 7 at Brighton. The Dreads play next Thursday at South Lyon.
