Surpassing the prediction machine on Athletic.net – men’s Cross Country has another great surprise meet finishing second at Regionals ahead of other local favorites Brighton and Skyline. This qualifies the mens’ team for a spot at the State Final meet this coming Saturday at the Michigan International Speedway.
Fueled by an incredible last mile by all of the varsity boys, they took second behind Okemos with a score of 96 with third place Brighton more than 10 points behind. Speedsters Jack Shelley and Miles Kanipe were running in the 14 and 15 spot all race – but with a huge push at the end, they ended up finishing 9th and 11th respectively (both in PR time!) and not too far behind in 18th place- Marc Lopez hit a season best time to finish in the top 20 also moving up several spots with a huge effort. The remaining runners were also hoping to pick up a few places over the last mile of the race and they did just that – barreling down the final shoot passing everyone in their wake – with incredible effort and determination, the next trio of Grant Sprague, Tyrus Wood and Lucas Betzoldt finished within one second of each other, all reaching Personal Records or Season Best’s. Seth Greenfield rounded out the Dexter Varsity team also with a strong last mile.
The Junior Varsity Regional race followed with Max Kleinhenz as the first Dexter Dreadnaught to cross the line with a strong PR and Ben Beckman less than a second behind. These nine runners trained this week and head to the State meet tomorrow. The rest of the JV race was extremely strong with freshman Nate Larson and Owen Huard coming in close behind Ben, exemplifying the depth and promise of this Dreadnaught team with a total of 22 Personal Records, and 7 Seasonal Bests between the two races.
Second year coach Lex Williams stated “I’m extremely proud of the team and how they’ve progressed and developed throughout the season. Our performance at the Regional championship (with 22 personal best times) shows that we’re running fast when it counts and have positive momentum entering Saturday’s state championships.”
The Division 1 race will begin at 2:00 pm at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn Michigan.
