Cross Country: Pioneer first, Dexter fifth at FGR Invitational

Nick Foster led the way as the Pioneer boys’ cross country team ran away with the Father Gabriel Richard Invitational on Saturday at Hudson Mills. The Pioneers finished with 35 points, 10 better than second-place Plymouth in the large school race.

Brother Rice was third with 79 points followed by Fenton (122), Dexter (154), Grosse Pointe North (154), Grosse Pointe South (216) and Brighton (238) in the 12-team race.

Foster, the top rated runner in the state, finished with a solid time of 15 minutes, 47.6 seconds on a muddy slow course.

Also finishing strong for the Pioneers were John Florence (sixth, 16:26.5), Aldo Pando-Girard (eighth, 16:35.7), Ethan Mielock (ninth, 16:36.2) and Jack Wallace 11th. There was only a 10 second spread from the No. 2 runner to the No. 5 runner for the talented Pioneers.

Dexter was led by junior Lucas Betzoldt who finished 23rd in 17:15.0. Sophomore Nathan Larson was 26th (17:22.7), sophomore Owen Huard was 34th (17:41.0), senior Nick Barnes was 37th (17:46.5) and senior Ben Beckman was 42nd (17:55.5) for the Dreadnaughts.

In the medium school division, Ann Arbor Greenhills ran eighth with 198 points while Gabriel Richard was 11th with 264 points. Greenhills was led by Raman Sahota who took 13th in 16:58.7, Andrew Angold-Stephens who was 33rd in 17:35.4 and Peter Lastoskie who was 36th in 17:39.2.

Richard was led by Andy Edwards who was 30th in 17:34.6 and Vincent Pucillo who was 43rd in 17:48.1.
The Richard girls finished third with 63 points, just six spots behind second-place Pontiac Notre Dame Prep. Leading the way was senior Claire McNally, who took first in 18:44.5.

Ember Larson was 13th in 20:10.7, Caroline Bodary was 14th in 20:13.3, Dana Bodary 17th in 20:21.5, Izzie Lashaway 18th in 20:30.7 and Anna Vogel 19th in 20:36.7 for Richard.
