City Council to Vote on Border-to-Border Trail Signage, 2015 Street Program Engineering

Dexter’s portion of the Washtenaw County Border-to-Border Trail will be one step closer to being fully realized as envisioned years ago — as a fully developed trail connecting Dexter to Chelsea, Ann Arbor and elsewhere in the county with signage and other amenities.

The county’s proposed way-finding signage will guide trail users to the two active community connectors on Dexter’s trail segment. These signs will outline two routes, one for handicapped trail-goers and another route for everyone else that requires traversing stairs from Alpine to Mill Creek Park North.

The signs are 12-by-6 inches and have already been approved by the Planning Commission. To see the signage map and the proposed sign design look at pages 82-84 of the embedded city council agenda below.

Dexter’s Parks & Recreation Committee requested that the county include a handicap indicator on the signs for the handicap or “downtown” route, which city engineering firm Orchard Hiltz & McCliment is looking into with regard to verifying that said route is in fact totally handicap accessible.

The Planning Commission also requested that the signs include indicators of “downtown route” or “historical route,” but county parks officials indicated in their community to city government that the size of the signs would not accommodate such additional information.

Council will also review for approval a $9,200 proposal from OHM for engineering services pertaining to the 2015 Street Project (see page 86 of the agenda). The scope of work would include assistance with drainage improvements in the Hudson/Grand area, developing bid documents, attending public meetings at which the project is a topic of discussion, and attendance at pre-construction meetings.
