The Dexter Community Schools Board of Education will join the legions of Michigan school districts who are or will be receiving and discussing their financial projections for the 2015-16 school year.

Many school districts in the state, including Dexter’s, have been going through a yearly cycle of receiving and discussing the grim financial prospects that public education faces. In Dexter’s case, this agenda item is typically followed by a flurry of meetings, discussions and ultimately a budget resolution that buys a bit more time.

Although revenue has crept up from $33,470,762 in 2013-14 to a projected $35,609,075 in the 2015-16 school year, expenses have grown at a greater pace from $33,860,867 to $36,642,397 over the same time period. Without any action by the school board and the district’s administrative team, the district’s total fund balance will fall to $4,848,713 or 13.2 percent of the total budget next year from $6,183,339 or 18.3 percent in 2013-14. The unassigned portion of the fund balance, or the district’s “rainy day” fund would fall to $806,710 or 2.2 percent from 1.352,269 or 4 percent.

DCS was able to keep the total fund balance at $5,882,035 or 16.2 percent this current fiscal year, with an unassigned fund balance of $1,756,699 or 4.8 percent. These numbers are an improvement over the last year’s version of these projection numbers, before the current fiscal year got underway.

In addition to budget discussions, the board will also consider many other items including a Mandarin language program and more new technology at Wylie Elementary School. While budgets tighten and financial realities must be faced, district officials have to simultaneously ensure that Dexter’s children are prepared for the global economy in which they will vie with their peers for professional opportunities.
