Want to start 2017 on a healthier path? The Dexter Wellness Center is offering dozens of new winter community programs to make your wellness journey fun and fulfilling. And you don’t even have to be a member to participate!
Below are just a few of the many options available in the new year. Be sure to register soon (734-580-2500) for any programs that catch your eye, as space is limited. Check out this guide for a complete list of ALL winter community programs happening at both the Dexter and Chelsea wellness centers!
Swim & Gym Pass for Children and Parents: Come enjoy the pools and/or our full-court gymnasium with your kiddos! The fee for this special pass includes access to our lap pool, warm-water pool, and gymnasium for one child (6 months to 15 years) AND two parents or legal guardians, during the following times: Monday/Wednesday 9-11:30am, Tues/Thurs/Fri 4:30-7pm, Sat/Sun 1-3:30pm. Pass is $80 and is good for one full month.
Special-Needs Movement: Any youth or adult with special needs will enjoy this fun, ability-appropriate class! It’s a great way to increase activity through supportive and energetic exposure to fitness and exercise. Check out this story of a past participant! Saturdays 1/14-2/25 and 3/4-4/22, 2:15-3:15pm. $49 (or $35 if the attendee or their parent is a wellness center member).
“Social Dance…and all that jazz”: This is an introductory workshop on a variety of social dance styles, including merengue, salsa, classic waltz, foxtrot, jitterbug, swing, and more! All abilities welcome. If you can count to 4, you can learn to dance with a partner! Mondays 1/16-2/27 or 3/6-4/24, 7:30-8:30pm. $84/couple (or $70/couple for wellness center members).
Beginner Swim: Here’s a great chance for adults and youth (12+) to learn freestyle swimming! Participants should already be somewhat comfortable treading or swimming in deep water. Learn to maintain a correct, streamlined body position while practicing stroke mechanics and building endurance. Mondays, 1/16-2/27 or 3/6-4/24, 8:30-9:30am. $91 (or $70 for wellness center members).
Koru Mindfulness & Meditation: In this evidence-based program developed at the counseling center of Duke University, you’ll learn practical skills to improve concentration, get better sleep, manage stress, and live more intentionally. FREE intro on Wednesday 1/25 or Thursday 3/2, 6:30-7:30pm. For a more comprehensive experience, attend the 4-week workshop ($60): Wednesdays, 2/8-3/1, 6:30-8pm or Thursdays, 3/9-3/30.
“Put Your Best Fork Forward”: Each one of us holds the tools to make healthier food choices. Make 2017 the year that you put those tools to work for your health! In this FREE workshop, come and learn about whole grains and new recipes to try. Monday 3/6, 6:30-7:30pm in the Dexter Wellness Center Conference room. (This workshop will also be offered at the Chelsea Wellness Center, 3/9, 6:30-7:30pm.)
Women’s Weights #185: Gain greater flexibility and condition your entire body, while reducing the risk of injury and improving agility and balance. This high-rep, high-intensity workout will push your limits. Each workout includes 185 reps of a different exercise (hence the name!). Tuesdays 3/7-4/25 or Thursdays 3/9-4/27, 9-10am. $78 (or $58 for wellness center members).
Fundamentals of Yoga and Stretching: Yoga and stretching designed for every body! This intro-level class will focus on stretching, breathing, alignment, and muscle development. Great for those who feel tight and inflexible, and for those who want to learn about basic yoga poses and benefits. Tuesdays, 1/17-2/28 or 3/7-4/25. $78 (or $56 for wellness center members).
