Sunday, May 3 is the time for “love”. The Dexter Community Band will present their annual spring concert “Salut d’Amore” at 3:00 pm in the Dexter Center for the Performing Arts located in Dexter High School. The high school is locales at 2200 N.Parker Road. The concert is free and open to the public.
The concert will open with an exciting new band arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet by Mark Hindsley. Edward Elgar wrote the beautiful Salute d’ Amour as an engagement present for his future wife.
The band will perform another new band arrangement of this romantic piece by Toshinari Iijima. Featuring the familiar tragic love melody from the Puccini”s opera Madam Butterfly, the ensemble will present Fantasy arranged for band by Yo Goto.
A new vocalist to the area is, Fiona Linn who is from Adelaide, Australia. She received her bachelor’s degree in vocal performance and has performed professionally throughout Australia. She moved to Ann Arbor to complete post graduate studies at the University of Michigan. Locally she performs with the Vocal Arts Ensemble and the Depot Town Big Band. In August of 2014 she returned to Australia to perform in a world premiere production of the Philip Glass portrait opera trilogy, Akhnaten, the Einstein on the Beach and Satyagraha. She will perform A Gershwin Tribute to Love based on the melodies of George and Ira Gershwin.
The concert will conclude with some of Frank Sinatra’s most famous love songs including Witchcraft and Love and Marriage. This concert is made possible in part by the donations made in the memory of Bette M. Reinhold by the Savitski family.
